You dont have a GPA yet. A GPA is typically a scaled score of 0.0 to 4.0. You likely have a score average based on a 0 - 100 scale. Colleges and universities employ a GPA while highs schools, etc typically give grades on the other scale.

It isnt difficult to convert the scores though. Approximately:

90 - 100 = 3.3+ GPA
80 - 89 = 2.8 - 3.2 GPA
70 - 79 = 2.1 - 2.7 GPA
65 = 2.0 GPA (passing grade)

These are approximations but representative.

Do you mean your average grade is an 83? (as in, grades out of 100 for each class at the end of each semester IE. 80, 83, 90, 75)?

Because that would mean that you have from a 3.00 to 3.33 on the GPA scale.
And another person said up to a 4.0. The only way you can get a 4.0 is to have straight As.

A+ 4.00
A 4.00
A- 3.84
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67
D+ 1.33
D 1.00
F 0.00

Well, I noticed some of your replies suggested that all schools go on a 4.0 scale. I've never heard of a GPA that high (your 83), however there are other scales schools use. In fact, the high school I went to was on a 12.0 scale. My suggestion would be to contact your guidance counselor to have yours clarified.

Your GPA should be listed on your report card, if you're in high school. Like others have said, it's on a 4.0 scale--sort of. Some schools now "weight" honors and AP classes. Basically you get extra points because those classes are more advanced. In that case it's actually possible to have a GPA above 4.0.

It's just a different scale.

Their's is out of four while your's is out of 100.

Multiply 3.2 or 3.5 by 25 to find out what it would be out of 100.

They're looking for an 80 - 87.5
You're right there!

Good luck w/ college apps (I'm in the same boat)!

The 83 is your grade, not the Grade Point Average. Ask your guidance counselor for your GPA. They have that at all times.

83 most likely represents your average score in class. If an 83 is a B average, then your GPA would be between a 3.0 and a 3.6. Here's a site that can help you calculate your GPA.

Dear...person of indeterminate gender...

Your GPA of 83 is remarkable. You must be freaking Stephen Hawking. Which is amazing. Tell me, what is the meaning of life?

Typos are the modern death of mankind.
