At home I have an iMac with Photoshop CS2. At work I have a Dell and a PowerMac. The Photoshop software is loaded on the Windows machine only because that's the version that they had already bought when I started working there. I prefer it on the Mac because I am proficient at using both machines and I prefer to use the Mac. But look at it this way: Photoshop works great on both systems. The Dell XPS and the iMac are both excellent machines to work with. It comes down to preference for a particular operating system in my opinion. If you are used to using Windows, get the Dell and load Photoshop onto it. If you prefer the Mac, use it on the Mac.
Mac is more secure, easier to use, and has more built-in features that you'll actually use. It sucks at compatibility with software compared to Windows. Windows is virus-prone, crash-prone, and error-prone. It works with just about anything. But Macs now run Windows.

Well PCs are far more powerful than an equivalently priced Mac, and Dells are cheaper than HP in price, about the same quality. For what you said you wanted to do, you probably should go with a Mac because the areas you listed are its specialty. But if you ever, and I mean ever, plan on playing a game on the computer, definately get the XPS, as Mac don't game at all, even with Windows running on them. Keep in mind I am saying Mac based on the Operating System, as far as performance goes, the iMac is a joke compared to an XPS, and I mean literally a joke.

Personally I would get a Mac because you can run Windows on it too.
But it comes down to how much you want to spend (both time and money). Either choice is fine if you know what you're doing.
The iMac can run Photoshop but the speed isn't as good as a native version (currently anyways). If the speed is too slow, just load up Windows and it'll run full speed.

I have a mac mini, and I've never had any problems with it. No, viruses, no nothing. The apple programs that come with the system are great and easy to use. Kicks butt on a Dell or other PC any day. I have had both.

Listen, the person who said the mac was made for photo sharing is just plain being silly. Mac was out long before the Windows based computers ever hit the market. The reason Windows now out sell Mac is due to how cheaply they are built. Mac still out performs a Windows based PC any day of the week.
I have had two Dell computers. In fact the computer I am using right now as I type this is a Dell Dimension 5150, which is a top of the line machine. However, I will never purchase another Dell computer again. While Dell has good hardware, Dells customer service sucks big time. The hassles of getting Dell to live up to its warranties is a nightmare to say the least. As long as you don't have a problem you will do just fine. However, the moment you have a real problem you will be up the creek as Dell is good at coming up with every excuse under the sun for not honoring its written word. Dell may deal well with its large corperate customers, but us small fish are simply left out in the cold. Dell does not see any reason to treat us small fry well.
I spent five months attempting to get Dell to give me back the refund they promised me. I had it in writing and they still did not send me my money. It was to be returned to my bank account, not even sent via the mail, and yet they could not seem to let the money out of their sticky hands long enough for it to ever reach my account. They took my money in three days, (I was stupid enough to replace the broke unit with a new one from Dell), and yet my refund just never seemed to make it into my account. Three months later somebody finally returned a phone call and a portion of my refund was placed into my account. About a third of the agreed upon amount. Then it took another month to get the other third and a full month and a half to get the final amount from Dell.
Now, Dell picked up the broken computer the very next day. Came right to my door and picked it up. My new order took two weeks to arrive, AFTER the order showed as "filled and shipped" on the online website where customers can go to "track" their purchases. When I called to find out what happened to my order nobody seemed to know what I was talking about. Finally it was "discovered" that my shipping order was misplaced. If I had not had my own records of the purchase that would have been my own bad luck.
With both orders Dell failed to send any paper work. I did not get any "thank you for choosing Dell" or any setup instructions or owners manual, or any paperwork other than a shipping list. I did receive a owners manual for the printer, but that was all. I was expecting the DVD disks with the OS and the utilities, but they did not arrive either, nor did I receive any paper work on my warranty, not the year warranty or the three year extended warrany I purchased. With the second purchase I did not even get a shipping list, only a shippin label. I was told there was a "thank you" on link twenty seven on the shippin lable, "if you just look towards the bottom of the page". What is up with that? I spend a lot of money on the Dell due to it supposidly being superior, I can get the exact same machine from HP for a third of what I spend on my Dell, in fact a month later I bought an identical HP for a third of the price. Well, my fiance did. lol Jokes on me!! lol Anyway, I also did not receive any form of a receipt either. Not on either machine. I finally called and insisted they send my receipt out six months later when they kept telling me again and agian they mailed it. Oh, they also told me I did "not need" the OS CD due to Dell's superior "re-imaging system". Well, five weeks later I had a major crash and needed the OS CD which they had to mail to me and it did not arrive for two weeks. If I had it I would have been up and running a few hours later.
I know many others who have had simular dealing with Dell. I agree that the hardware is superior, but the hassle of getting Dell to treat customers with a small amount of decency even is appolling to me. I have read here many who have had poor relations with Dell. As I said at the beginning of this, I will never purchase anything other than ink cartriges (over priced too) from Dell agian.
If you DO decide to go with Dell, make sure you tell them you expect a copy of your OS CD to come with your system. Don't listen to their speil about their "Re-Imaging System" and how it is so good you "don't need" your OS Disks. It is a bunch of bull.
Now, you can take into consideration that the hardware is of good quality, and you may be one of the lucky ones who never needs the disks or your receipt or use your warranty and has a really great experiance with Dell. If you do purchase from Dell, I hope you don't go through what I did and what others have too. By the way, it is not just between the Mac and an Dell machine. There are other options and they are good options. HP is a good machine and much less expensive. Just because it is less expensive does NOT mean inferior quality. I know as I have an HP AND a Dell in my home office.
Good luck and I hope you are very happy with which ever machine manufacturer you decide to purchase from. Purchasing a new computer is an exciting event. I just would hate for it to go bad on you as it did me and many other I know. I advice all I know to leave Dell to the large corperations.
