The biomedical model is based on scientific inquiry and research. It looks at the component parts of a person or illness, rather than taking a holistic model, and often fails to account for the sociological determinants of health (such is income, etc.) It has been sucessful in contributing to the development of pharmaceuticals, and assessing cellular, hormonal, chemical and other 'samll-part' aspects of the body and health. "Allopathic" medicine counteracts symptoms and outcomes of illness, versus "homeopathic" medicine, which works with the body's own healing processes.

The biomedical model does not take into account the psychological/spiritual/social/environmental effects of disease and illness - it focuses purely on the physiological aspects so that a diagnosis can be reached quickly. In other words, this approach has been around for decades and only fairly recently has a more holistic approach been considered. Biomedicine is concentrated on scientific, quantatitive values and rarely qualitative.
