Bridges can symbolize many things. They are commonly used to symbolize a transition from one thing to another. Milestones in life for example. An example would be to say a person bridged from childhood to being an adult.
Another real-life example where the word is used in Cub Scouts where boys "bridge" from Webelos to Boy Scouts. This can include a ceremony where a boy physically crosses a bridge and changes from one rank to another.
