Get a small bird cage and put a mouse in side. Make sure the bars on the cage is wide enough for the snake to slide through. The check every day. When it goes in to get the mouse it won't be able to slide out because of his body is fatter now because of the mouse.

The kind of snake in your basement...if it is trully all black is a very common rat snake. they are non venomous, however, they carry alot of bacteria in there mouth(they are a scavenger type snake) and their bites do hurt. This snake is not a huge threat to your family. Animal control may or may not come to remove it. We had to remove it ourselves when we had 1. I just picked it up with a stick and set it in a big trash can and drove it to the local lake.

I had this problem too and i went to an exterminator. He got rid of the snake and told me to put mothball flacks around my foundation in the early spring and again in the summer. He said they don't like to cross them. I'm not sure why, but I haven't had a problem with black snakes in my basement since then.

I'm not sure where you live, but to be on the safe side, call 911 and ask for your local animal Control. they will come out and safely remove it. If it's a venimous snake you could get bit and end up with a lot of problems. Don't try it if you don't know what you're doing. By the way, he has shed his SKIN and that tells you that he's growing and getting bigger.
