I think it's because when someone else yawns it makes us realize that we really are tired. Or, we just do it like we do other things, like when someone else smiles, we smile. When someone else is laughing, we start laughing. Things like these are contagious, why? I don't know.

this is such a crazy thing. i yawned once reading the question then i yawned again reading the answers i don't know why,maybe it is an unconscious thing that we do.

I don't know but it sure does work. I did it in church when I was young & the Rev. & most of the congregation were yawning. It was a hoot!
