Because they are greedy and short-sighted. Worse than that, because their actions don't directly affect them and because the destruction of the environment will occur after they have died they don't care and only seek to gratify their own whims.

Because we live on a planet where people are driven by greed! People fail to see that their actions have detrimantal effects for everyone else in the long run. I am so with you on this one! They think that what they are doing is of little significance. People need to realise that it all adds up in the end!
