To stop the sweat from your forehead dripping in your eyes.

This question has come up repeatedly over the years. The consensus is that eyebrows keep moisture (sweat, mostly, but also rain) from running down one's forehead and straight into the eyes. This explanation has the advantage of being quite easily demonstrated (notice the distinct slant of the brow hairs, which conducts water sideways), and having a logical survival advantage. There have been one or two comments from people who were, for one reason or another, temporarily without eyebrows who claimed the difference was noticeable. I've always been content with that explanation. It may not have much impact on a modern human's life, but next time you're hunting (or being hunted) on the African savanna, try shaving off your eyebrows and see if salty sweat running in your eyes makes the task any more difficult. I'll bet it does.
It also helps when you break some big news to a crowd to identify the ones in the group who are surprised or suspicious.

The main function of the eyebrows is to prevent moisture (mostly sweat and rain) from dripping into the eye (a critical organ). The typical curved shape of the eyebrow (with a slant on the side) and the direction in which eyebrow hairs are pointed, make sure that moisture has a tendency to flow sideways of the eyes, mainly along the side of the head but also along the nose. The protruding brow ridges of modern humans could also still play a role in this process. Eyebrows also prevent debris such as dandruff and other small objects from falling into the eyes, as well as providing a more sensitive sense for detecting objects being near the eye, like insects. Eyebrows also have a facilitary function in communication, strengthening expressions like amazement or anger.

I watched a programme on telly which briefly mentioned this. It is believed that they are there to keep sweat out of our eyes when we are exerted for whatever reason. The saltiness of the sweat would probably cause irritation to our sensitive eyes

A lot of people are saying it's to keep the sweat & rain out of your eyes, but how about as a way of expressing ourselves??? The rain & sweat will find its way into your eyes anyway if it wants to.

So that rain and sweat don't go in your eyes, sight is obviously important enough to have a few hairs above your eyes.
