Starting fluid is used only when a car is extremely cold and the fuel just is not firing off. The fluid is ether and ignites very easily. However, if you spray too much, you could do damage. Ether is generally used on diesel engines only since diesels do not have spark plugs. Diesels are started by compression temperature. Ether works there because it fires off at lower temperatures. Diesel pre heaters heat up the air a few degrees to get the vehicle to start.

Starter fluid was originally designed for diesel engines. Diesel fuel is ignited by the heat of compression(that is why diesel engines have a much higher compression ratio than do car engines). Diesel engines can be equipped with a glow plug or another electric igniter to help get the engine up and running. In severe cold weather it is often required to use a starter fluid (mainly ether) which is very combustible thus gets the engine going. It is generally not recommended for car use . If the engine does not start there are reasons for it, solve the problem.

Starting fluid is a gas that is more explosive than typical gasoline, it works by rapidly evaporating and causing a large explosion in the cylinders to get the engine spinning. It is not good for gasoline engines, it is considered a dry explosive, it can damage valve seals, rings, scorch cylinders, and too much of it can destroy you engine.

Its Ether and highly volatile. Its sprayed direct into the carb but can cause per-ignition on one or more cylinders and can damage your engine. It works but use it carefully and not often.

It puts highly combustable ether in an aerisol form into the carb. Causing the ignition to be easier.

It's highly flamable, in fact im suprised they still sell it in America. Anyway if your ever stuck Carburetor cleaner works fine... and cleans the carburetor at the same time.
