This is going to be total speculation on my part. He probably likes you. But he is to shy and very self conscious and may even lack self-confidence to approach you. That is why he got defensive when you spoke to him. He probably feels very awkward. You also mention that he isn't the best looking guy either. He is probably well aware of that fact. In fact someone in his life may have made it a very clear point to him about that fact and that alone would account for his lack of self confidence. I know all this for sure because that guy was me about 40 years ago. I lost out on a lot of nice girls because of that. If you think you might like him, I suggest that you be as sweet as you can to him and slowly draw him out. You just might be doing yourself a favor and him too. Contrary to popular belief not all of guys are over-confident, conceited, jerks. I hope this helps and good luck. The male ego is a very fragile thing especially at 16.

This is a common practice among guys to make you feel drawn to him. If you really like him go ahead and ask him directly whether he is interested in you. If you don't like him ignore him.
By the way don't just go on the looks. Find out more about him if you decide to talk to him. Play safe.

there's some possibilities: one million. eye touch makes him worried 2. he observed something exciting over that way 3. he has imaginative and prescient issues (cataracts, lazy eyes) 4. you're grotesque

he obviously likes you and wants to start a friendship with you and is just feeling out the situation, as he doesn't want to feel foolish if you publicly rebuff him. If you like him, follow his lead and see where it goes. If you don't like him, continue to ignore him and he may go away.

thts wat this boy from my school does to me everyday and he hangs out in a total different group of ppl so i was suprised he started coming over and talking to my group of friends. and 1 day when i went to talk to a teacher or sometin my friend who i can trust 100% told me he asked her who iwas dating and if i liked him she told him she didn't know and she would ask so on the bus later tht day she asked me and told me he wanted to know so now we're dating so yea thts wat it meant for me so if u like him u make the move and ask him out if he won't. o and sry this is kinda long.

I think he likes you, but he's shy. And he's afraid to get shot down (turned down), so he talks to other members of your group so it's less obvious that he likes you.
Just be yourself around him.
