encyclopedia is the American spelling
its like if you had to spell "color" you would get marked wrong for spelling it like "colour"

The former is the American spelling, the latter the British. Both are correct. I would contest getting that marked wrong!!

even if I was a teacher here in America, I'd accept the British spelling 'encyclopaedia' alongside 'encyclopedia'.
In that sense make it parallel: 'I read an article in the encyclopedia about anemia' or 'I read an article in the encyclopaedia about anaemia'.
Not 'I read an article in the encyclopaedia about anemia' or 'I read an article in the encyclopedia about anaemia'.

Well.. I have seen it spelled ONLY ONE WAY and that is encyclopedia... the other way you mentioned is NOT correct and I have NEVER seen it spelled that way
