Next week is my homecoming dance. I didn't want to go because i don't know how to dance but all of my friends forced me to go. I went last year(at a different school) and had a miserable time because i didn't dance. I swore to myself I'd never go to a dance again, but here I am. I'm determined not to make that happen this year. But homecoming is next week and I don't know what to do. I've tried practicing in front of the mirror and copying music videos but it just dosn't seem to work. I do ok in front of my mirror but than on the dance floor I get all stiff and shy. Does anyone have any tips on how to dance or how I can learn to dance. Not like ballet or salsa but like club dancing. I would ask one of my friends but i feel embarassed, so this is my last hope. Please help.

If your friends forced you to go, you should try to dance in front of them. I bet if you asked them, they have felt embarrassed and wondered if they looked silly or funny. If you can't ask your friends, who can you ask???????? If you notice, everyone has a different style of dance. No one really dances the same. The key is to just get out there and have fun. If you focus on if you look funny or are you doing it right, you are going to be miserable. You have to just try to listen to the music, feel the music, look at your partner, and enjoy yourself. Don't let your embarrassment get in the way. I call it the "wiggle" dance because that is what basically what everyone is doing. They get out there and wiggle their bodies. Just have fun. If you don't feel comfortable with certain types, like rubbing against other people, don't do it. No one is going to be mad at you. Have fun. I am rooting for you!

The key to dancing great is just to have confidence in yourself. Laugh, make fun of yourself, jump up and down, act like your in your room dancing to your favorite song--- just have fun!

What to do before hand: if you think you're going to have a bad time-- you WILL have a bad time. It sounds like your friends really want you there so make the most out of it. Think that you will be making a great memory so savor every moment of it.

also: you could "practice" by swaying back and forth to whatever rhythm is playing in front of the mirror. if you're thinking about Club-dance moves, go to the club and try imitating what you see. the key is to RELAX your shoulders and SMILE.

What to do when you're there: If you still feel a little insecure, be the first one to get all your friends to dance. Drag them to the very middle dance floor where it's all crowded. If you dance like you're having a seizure, complain that it was just too crowded that everyone kept on bumping you.

HAVE FUN!!!

Just ask your friends! If they're really your friends, they'll help you, believe me.
Also, just dance like no one is watching you. You may feel foolish, but once your friends join in, it won't matter.
