low lying mist (like smoke) in a field just before dusk, when it swirls and snakes around your feet, or a shoreline with a high silver moon reflecting in the water?

I would have to go with the shoreline with a high silver moon reflecting in the water, probably just because of the way it sounds right now...when you talk about mist swirling like a snake, it kind of makes me think of something rather dark...like nice on the surface but there is something in that field that just aint right....

Moon in the water. Means it's night and you got all evening to spend with your loved one. Smoke before dusk means the evening is over and you and your lover are going your separate ways.

Neither. Nothing beats a good sunset. If I had to pick one of your suggestions, I'd go with the moon. Never seen smoke lying on the ground in a field. What planet are you from?
