If you know this is the problem it should be an easy job with patience. If ya got no patience take it in. If you can get the car started again see if it will run with the battery disconnected. If it does the alt is still working. If it does not it is running off the battery.

A dead alternator itself will not kill a car. Now if the alt. is bad and the car has run the battery down that is another story. You're car will run off the alternator once you get it started, but if the alternator is defective there will be insufficient voltage for the computer and ignition systems. Changing an alternator can be a difficult job depending on its location. OBTW if the alternator ran the battery dead either replace or recharge the current battery before replacing the alternator. The current styles of alternators are not designed to charge batteries just maintain them. Also make sure positive battery cable is disconected before unhooking wiring harness from the alternator.
