You may mean a USTA rating so you can play on a team in your area. The most common way it works is that the clubs , mainly indoor facilities in the off season will hold a rating session. You show up, hit a few ground strokes , volleys , overheads and serves. They may ask you to demonstrate a certain type of spin and placement to help the USPTA certified rater who makes the decision get the correct rating for you. I set one up for the members at the country club I was teaching at about four years ago and the cost is about 15 dollars and you will play for about 15 minutes. I know you have to be a member of the USTA which you should do anyway ( World Tennis is a great magazine, which comes free with membership) . I do not remember if they mail you the result or give it to you on the spot. You can find out where the rating sessions are being held by contacting your USTA regional office in your area by phone or via the Internet.

Do you mean Lawn Tennis Association Rating?
An LTA Player Rating is a way of measuring your tennis ability, so you can see how you are improving. It also means you can make sure you are entering the right standard of competitions. It’s a bit like a golf handicap. If you say what your rating is, other players will know what level you are irrespective of age.

Your rating is assessed twice a year and your new rating will depend on your results in matches during the previous six months.

If you are consistently beating players who have the same rating as you or better, and not losing against too many players rated the same or lower, it is likely your rating will increase.

An LTA Player Rating, in conjunction with an LTA membership number, is also your passport to play in the 2,000 or so competitions run and overseen by the LTA. You will need to apply for a rating in order to enter our tournaments.

When you first apply, LTA will set your LTA Player Rating based on the information you give them in a simple questionnaire. After that, it will depend on your results from competitive matches against other rated players.
