This is what i call the 'It s a Wonderful Life' question. The Henry Fonda character was talked out of suicide by Clarance the Angel, by being shown how him not existing would effect those around him. Badly it seemed. Why go on living for your self.Is the value of a persons life contained in numerous connections seen and unseen.

1: Your chances of beng born were one in a zillion trillion (you know what I mean, your mum had to meet, and then fall in love with your dad at a certain place and time that neither might have attended for a million reasons; your mum's mum and dad ditto, and theirs ditto, and so on. If you do the math, your chances of being born were practically zero - a rainy night in AD 24 could have prevented it, but you were). That means, that you are very, very special indeed.

2: You are thoughtful, intelligent and sensitive, having posted this question. That makes you even more special.

3: You need more time to polish your grammar, because it's "affect", not "effect" others.

1) Have you ever been to Singapore? Japan? How about India? Well, that's one reason to go on living right there. How can you really know that life is not worth living if there are still so many places out there that you haven't seen? Even if you have seen them, I'm certain that in the vast reaches of planet Earth, you can always find new people and places, and more people and places after that. There is always more out there.

2) Have you fulfilled your potential? I don't mean this in a religious way, but have you ever thought that you might like being a gymnast, a black belt, a fencing master or something like that? Well, why don't you find some instructors in these thing and try that for a while? Try Yoga. Try ballet. Learn to play the guitar. Study a language. I'm certain that there is some activity that speaks to you, whether or not you've found it yet. Once you start learning something and come to love it, leaving your training to go and die will seem incredibly silly. Go gain some mad skillz in some field that seems interesting. Raise your levels, as the gamers say. That might be fun.

3) Have you ever sailed over the open sea and stared into the mouth of a hurricane, laughing in the wind with salt in your hair? I'm serious. Go have an adventure. At least then, if you die, you'll at least die doing something cool. Dying like a whimpering little girl with pills or a razor blade is disgraceful. George Bailey was choosing a disgraceful death. At least have the dignity to die in some incredibly dramatic way, like climbing Everest or surfing a fifty foot wave. And if you live through your adventure, life will taste sweeter, I promise. Even if all you did was go rafting on some whitewater. I'm lucky enough to have a job that requres me to have adventures from time to time, but anyone can find one. You just have to want to look for it. I mean, jeez, have you tried going on a fishing trip? Fishing is great!

This may all sound very smug, and perhaps it is. But no matter what, death will be there. It is a constant companion that will never leave your side and will come when you call (perhaps even before) no matter where you are. If you decide to go and see the world and do these things that life still has to offer, you can still die later. It really isn't even an option. You'll die sooner or later anyway, so why rush it? I think you'll find that when you look around there is more cool stuff to see and do than can ever be crammed into one lifetime. Shortening that lifetime just seems like a waste.

Oh, and George Bailey was played by Jimmy Stewart, not Henry Fonda. :-)

Judging by the answers that you have already received before mine, this would signify that you are an important person. Meaning you have a head on your shoulders to come up with such a question. This would mean to me that you were put on this earth for a higher purpose that what you know. Answer number 1.

Number 2 - how have you affected others? People are here to have an affect on others. It may be in relation to answer number 1, but you obviously are here to have an affect on others. Perhaps you are a teacher, or a lover, or a mentor. But you are here to have some sort of affect on those around you.

Number 3 - why not? Why not? Why shouldn't you be here to ask the questions? If I am here in response to your questions, then why shouldn't you be here? We all serve a higher purpose than we realize. And you have a purpose. You just have to find it. That is why you are here.

Number 4 - because you are important. I don't even know you, but I know that you are important. It's destiny that I should answer your questions, and it's destiny that you should ask them. Therefore it is important that we should have corresponded this way.

Keep your chin up. Every day is a bright new fresh start. See the world as something new and exciting every day. And that is why you should live.

Okay, it was James Stewart, not Henry Fonda in "It's A Wonderful Life," but I can see how you could make the mistake. They were good friends in real life, and room mates at one time, both tall, both around the same age, both had that kind of voice. To answer your question-
1) There is so much great stuff in this world to learn about, and good people to learn from.
2) You say, why go on living for your self?- that is so almost the whole point. Connections to others are very important. You can make them mean so much.
3) I will be glad to leave religion out of it, but it is not possible to leave out the truth that you are here for a better purpose than to do away with yourself. Any atheist knows that in his huge all-knowing brain, or at least feels it in the heart he denies having.

Anyway, what kind of question is it you are asking? You cannot leave certain elements out of it. The two you said to leave out are the very things that matter most. It is sad when someone dies without the discovery of either one. It all comes down to choice. Choose to learn more about the word of God.

1. So that you can watch "It's a Wonderful Life" again, and realize that it's not Henry Fonda, but Jimmy Stewart.

2. Because there's a good chance that there is no life after this. If this is all we got, we might as well stick around to see how the last act turns out.

3. Because as Dorothy Parker says:
Razors pain you; Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you; And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful; Nooses give;
Gas smells awful; You might as well live.

1. Killing yourself is a way of telling the world, "Okay ... you broke me ... you win." Do you really want to let the mother ******** beat you?

2. If there is anything you still want to try (skydiving, deep-sea diving, driving a really nice car, etc.) ... it might seem like there's no way you can get to do those things, and that might be why you're thinking of giving up. Think of it this way, though ... once you're dead, you _definitely_ can't do those things ... right now, you still have a chance, no matter how far-off that chance is.

3. If you really, truly, and genuinely are prepared to die, that gives you an enormous advantage over people who are clutching to their lives as if it was all that mattered. If you decide to put off suicide, even for a little while, think of what you could accomplish. No one could intimidate you ... no one could humiliate you. When this life truly ceases to have any importance to you, it really doesn't make any sense to commit suicide; why bother? Death is an inevitability. If that doesn't bother you, you are truly free to do whatever you choose.

I hope this is just a hypothetical question. If it's not, and you're seriously thinking about committing suicide ... dude, just let it go. The true upside to not committing suicide is the fact that you get to live to see the next Very Bad Thing (tm) befall whoever it is that was driving you to think about suicide (I say whoever instead of whatever because as far as suicide goes, it tends to be a who instead of a what. If it is a what, though, that's even easier ... "whats" tend to change very quickly).

You did not define religious belief; perhaps God is just a religion to you, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I have a relationship with God. Why? We are both rational beings and we can communicate, that is not religious. Here are 3 reasons: 1) if you are still in your sins, you will miss heaven. 2) You can't play God, you didn't create yourself. 3) Suicide is a coward's way out. Try reading Romans chapters 1-5. A relationship with God through Jesus Christ is fulfilling and satisfying.

three reasons all come down to one reason. your life effects others in a way you don't even know. if you are truly a bad and evil person, please kill yourself. but if you are not, then preserve yourself and understand how the effect of your life effects others.
if you are suicidal, then get out of your misery for one afternoon and go out and help someone else. i know that it can be hard to move if you are seriously depressed. i couldn't even move my hands to answer the phone. at one point i couldn't even write a sentence, my brain was so damaged. had to leave a super high paying job because i couldn't bear to live in the same city with her. then i came to teaching. the teaching of children. it changed my life forever. i tried the u.s. as a science teacher. forget it. if you want to be truly happy get out of all the fking bullshit there.
you can contribute to the lives of others. especially the live of children. get out of your own misery and try helping someone else that has even less. millionares commit suicide. a very selfish act when they had so much to give to others. i don't care if you're not a millionare and have only got two bucks in your pocket. what will you do with two bucks left in your pocket that you could have given to a child for an ice cream cone and made them happy? stupid man. john lennon said it best. you are equal to the love you give.
i hope you decide to live.

How old are you? You could become someone we could all admire. You are part of mine and my children's future. You can make the difference, you just have to want it bad enough. Life IS a gift and you make the choice of how to live it. Whether its a religious one or not. There is no answer to your question because your life does matter because it WILL affect others!!!

1. You are denying yourself the opportunity to continue to experience life further.
2. You are not your creator, so you have no right to end your existence.
3. Killing oneself is a task that requires a lot of will power and planning. If it is possible to redirect that will power and planning into your life, you can create something beautiful out of your life.
