2 weeks ago I upgraded to tiscali max which is supposed to be up to 8mb. I have done a speed test and it says my speed is 262144 kbps. Is that about 8mb? Can someone tell me if I am getting the speed I am paying for? Thanks

The truth is that the telephone line system does not support 8mb. They are working on it so hang on for a few more weeks and you should notice a difference. Your speed is 2.6mb by the way.
I don't think they should be allowed to advertise 8mb until that is possible, do you?

2.6 MB, I think. Don't forget the small print: UP TO 8MB is promised, but your actual speed depends on things other than Tiscali's bit, like, for example, how good your phone line is, how many people are using it,etc.

No it's not!
With Tiscali and all other broadband firms you have to read the small print, it should state connection available and speed to depends on your area (local exchange.)
The nearer you are to your local exchange the more higher your connection should be. But knowing Tiscali they may not be providing you standards.

I have the same situation and I only get 2 meg but in the blurb is does say up to if the exchange equipment will allow it so both you and I may have to wait until the equipment catches up

If you want to do a proper speed test then do not use wireless connection.
Plug in an ethernet cable (if you have not done so already) then do your test.

Hi. Divide kbps by 8 to get kBps. I get 32,768. This is equal to 3.2 mBps.

There must've been something wrong with the reading.
262144 kbps = 256Mb/s

You must be reading that wrong, Most broadband reads or speed is measured in Mbps.
