Fact from fiction, truth from diction. affirmative action is an unavoidable life paradox, a ULP. Because when you point someone out for special treatment be it along color lines or gender, you make a blanket indictment on the whole class. You are basically saying, "I have to help you do this because there is no way you can get it done on your own" When you learned to ride a bike, at some point, your mom or dad had to let go of the handles and let you do it. Same with walking and eating. Some people will never do well, while others would exceed everything you thought about them. Affirmative action dose not allow for that. It pigeon holes everyone of that class in the same mold. But, there lies the paradox. If you did not have it there would be dicrimination.
People would be denied equal chances of advancement, being hired, enrolling simply because they were different or would not fit in. So even though Jim Crow will never be put out of the building because as soon as you perp walk him to the lobby someone like the Gaede twins will invite him back in. If we had a government that had a strong enough spine to really deal with out and out prejudice and racism, they would not have to try to put a Band Aid on it by affirmative action. Affiramitve action does not truely address rasiam and in some ways reenforces it and stoke the flames of it. If I were white and I did not like minorities and I knew the last 3 slots at the factory went to 2 Blacks and an Asian, or 2 Native Americans, and a Hispanic simply because of who they were born as when they had less skills than I. I would be pissed. And I might resent them more.
Maybe affirmative action stemmed from guilt that the government did very little in quashing racism and prejudice because they lacked back bone. Sometimes the government were de facto sponsors ot it. Such as the laws they created back around the Gold Rush to stem the "Yellow Tide"(Chinese immigrants coming over to build the railroads), the internment of Japanese during WWII, and the thousands of blacks that were lynched, displaces or harmed in the more than 300 race riots from the late 1800s to the 50s(all white started)and the government was either too feckless or to apathetic to step in there an asure justice and liberty for all.

affirmative action (aa) within itself is not bad. it is designed to prevent discrimination, however, it has caused a much worst situation. if you are hired to a job, you should be the right person for the job, not just a statistic. i have no issues with being not selected for a job, or getting a promotion because someone else is better qualified or more deserving. however, most places have now established employment and promotions based on the very thing that aa was trying to prevent. if a company is going to hire 10 people, they now have to make sure that they have so many women, so many minorities (white male being considered the majority), etc. so now 50 people interview and only 3 of the 10 that gets hired are the best qualified because of this quota. no one can argue that if the person next to them is better suited for the position, but if the companies don't keep a cross section of the population, regardless of the qualifications, they have to worry about being sued by the aclu.

I disagree with affirmative action because it's racist and sexist. I recently hired an assistant, and if I had eliminated a minority, I had to provide a written explanation. If I eliminated a white person, no explanation needed. I've also been the "token" female on the job, and that just bites.

Affirmative action is not necessarily a bad thing, as a number of people of color out there would not have gotten where they are without it. Unfortunately, there is a fine line between "colorblind" hiring and reverse racism. It can also lead to un- or underqualified individuals being hired or accepted into schools based purely on racial/ethnic status.
I firmly believe that color, gender, ethnic background, religion, and so forth should not be used as reasons to deny people opportunities. However, they should not be used to give people preference either.

In California they have ended AA and minorities graduates have increased. The reason being, during AA a minority would apply to a number of colleges. Extremely competitive schools would now be forced to choose some under qualified students to reach their quota. These students would then drop out.
Now that AA has been abolished these students are admitted into schools that while still reputable are more suited for them.
I like how Cris Rock put it though. 'I don't want to get a position over someone that is more qualified then me. But if we're tied ... hell ya give me the job.'

Having entered the cranky old fart stage of life, I can only muse on the good old days pre-political correctness. I can remember a time when you might have yelled out, "Oi, ethnic!" to one of your best mates and he or she didn't take offence. I also remember that your ethnic friends were valued for their own sake as opposed to politically mandated tolerance. You were free to vilify and dislike individual members of your own race too. It's a shame that some legislative wanker took the right of breezy cameraderie and cheerful disrespect (which was rarely misunderstood by the now targeted affirmative action groups), and turned it into a hate crime.

BA to attend my B.A, and then did loans for the M,A.
All Blacks had priority over me included the single daughter of a Doctor/ She got a job I didn't and my grades and test score for the government higher than hers.
It was not just, I cam from a deprived family, I'm disabled and I lost out to a rich Black rich woman with lower grades and test scores

Afirmative action is an insult to minorities! It's saying to them that they can't do it on there own, so "here is a job for you, even though you don't have the qualifications like the guy who does, and worked his butt off to get those qualifications"
There are plenty of minorities who have WORKED thier way to the top the same way everyone else does. There should be no free ride!

Because it's still discrimation! It gives EXTRA rights to a certain group of people. That's just as wrong as not giving them as many rights. The only way to be fair is to give everyone the SAME rights. No less and no more for anyone based on ethnicity.

It is plain and simple condescending and a band-aid, measure. It also avoid the real problems of ghettos and terrible education. I real solution would be to improve the quality of education in the poor communities across the country. This is a real solution; education gives real opportunity.
