If you were to listen to many art historians of the past they would say Raphael. The reason Da Vinci was great for his revelations in technical and scientific aspects of art. Michalangelo is known as the greatest painter of human figure and emotion. Raphael took a "middle path" and created a style that embraced the qualities of Da Vinci and Michelangelo. So those that said Da vinci probably have little experience in the varied artists of history. My answer in general way too amny styles and artists to ever place one as the greatest.
I am also appaled at the above notion of Thomas Kinkade he is a superficial artist with little depth to his work. The above answers are likely from people that enjoy art for all the wrong reasons.
Art is about the deeper meaning and context in comparison to human spirit.
Personally i enjoy salvador dali for his work however i think "K" has no idea what he is talking about, does he even knoe what his work stood for? "K" judging by your statement Dali would spin in his grave at your notion of "inspired" by his work of which you clearly do not understand.

It all depends on what style of art you like....

I like Salvador Dali, and have done for many years.... When I first saw his work it just inspired me. I liked his sculpture and his paintings... Maanged to see several originals in the Tate Gallery years ago....

As for a present day artist I love Gary Hodges and Kevin Hayler they're both wildlife artists with superb talent for detail....Gary Hodges has been around for longer, where as Kevin Hayler is much more recent but still very talented.... I have several of pictures from both artists signed, I have the ones I have from them displayed my home and very proud to own them....

I also like the Kiwi Artist D Vassey, due to the usage of colour and they way she expresses herself in her work... You can tell a Vassey just by looking at it.... She always uses gold and bright colours.....

Thomas Kinade is another artist that I like, his work is amazing, the use of colour and paint to show the work in detail, when you change the lighting the picture changes, so if you switch on a light nearby the picture looks like it's change and infact is has, he's using sometype of paint that eluminates, so the house lights look like they've just turned on, another time you look at the picture in different lighting it looks like the lights have turned off....

Take a look and see if they inspire you in the same way....

There is no-one that can be considered "the best". Too many styles too many genres to make such a statement. All it could ever come down to is a personal favorite and that's it.

Leonardo da Vinci...he is the Renaissance Man and it doesn't take much to prove why he isn't the best.
