I'll have to check the list, but the one that still haunts me is the time I leaned out of the car window and roared "Hurry up vegetable!" to a pedestrian who was walking too slowly across the crossing. The fellow turned around and he was a Down's Syndrome person. I still feel pretty rotten over that one.

Oh my! That must've really sucked! I can't recall any times I've put my foot in my mouth (I'm sure there's plenty though!), but I can recall one time where I've been on the other end. I dunno how much you know about curling, but here in Canada it's quite a big thing. My cousin happens to be Randy Ferby (won the World's Curling a couple of times, as well as the Brier, etc.. ). Anyways, my co-worker and I were talking about curling one day, and I asked her if she knew who Randy was.. She went into a huge rant about how she didn't like him, and thought he was an ***, and that she really thought he sucked.. everything you can imagine she said. I politely smiled and replied "He's my cousin..". Man, was her face red!!! She couldn't stop apologizing for the next hour, and even the next day! LOL. Honestly, it didn't really bother me 'cause her expression when I told her was priceless! That alone made my day!

A couple years ago, I was complaining to my family about a flight I had taken to Zurich that had had to make an emergency landing in a small town in South Carolina.
After going on for some time about the lack of safety regulations, and the inconvenience, etc., my beloved brother-in-law (for whom I had the kind of regard that is normally reserved for the Pope) asked, "Where did the plane put down?"
And I said, "Oh, some miserable Podunk place I never heard of in South Carolina called (X)."
And, he scowled slightly and said, "I was born there."
I wanted to shrivel up. I still cringe when I think about it!

I have stuck my foot in my mouth so many times it is hard to remember which is worse. How about this one,..... I was helping a guy do some ironwork for a reproduction Civil War wagon that he was building in his garage. I joked that surely he was not making something for himself, but something for his kids... Wow, sudden deadly silence. Apparently his spending so much free time in his garage making this thing for himself was a *real* sore point in his family. His sons just stood there and stared at the ground. I felt real bad about it.

oooh.... that train thing's bad. but how could you know?
Mine was when my 3 year old son walked up to my neighbor and said, "WHY DO YOU PUT YOUR SON IN DAY CARE? DON"T YOU KNOW THAT"S SO BAD FOR HIM? DON'T YOU KNOW HE MISSES YOU?"
It's great when people outside your house know what you are saying inside your house.....not. but, that's when he got a big long talk about not sharing opinions about people with people unless they ask and about treating everyone with respect.
i guess it worked out well in the end, because he's almost 14, considered very respectful and polite and he's friends with communists and capitalists, peaceniks and ROTC kids, the religious and the profane. he's pretty cool.

One time, while trying to get in line at Border's, my aunt cut in the line, fell on people, wandered in and around the velvet ropes and altogether seemed to be having an alzheimer's moment. I beckoned to her and when she found me, she said loudly - i don't think this is the right line. Many people were looking at us, and I said, "I'm sorry, we're from the mountains." And a nice gent said, "What mountain?" I stared at him, probably with my mouth open. He said - "Oh, you're using my heritage as a way to make fun of people. I see." People went from staring to glaring.
The saddest part - I am from a mountain!

Years ago my mother was set to make the brides maid and flower girls dresses for my husband's cousin's wedding. We were standing outside of our apartment complex one day and his fiancee walked out and I told her that my mother had agreed to do her wedding and she burst out crying and ran back into her apartment. I was bewildered and when I turned to my husband and asked him what was wrong. He said "Didn't I tell you that he got arrested a few days ago and he wont be out for a while". It turned out that he had a statutory rape charge that he was convicted of and was going to be serving 8-12 years in prison. Needless to say I was dumbfounded(My husband had forgotten to tell me). Talk about putting your foot in your mouth

The time I criticized another student's science fair project to the teacher, not knowing the project had been done by HER child, with HER help. I was embarrassed, but the project WAS pathetic.

I was at a football game and my team was sucking it up. I kept verbally abusing the quarterback for most of the game. The woman sitting next to me suddenly asked me if I was(my name), I said yes, she then says I am (her name) the quarterbacks wife.
