There is a very high turnover in my department. My boss (who is female) is known to snap at any moment. One of my coworkers announced a few months ago that she is pregnant. Since her announcement, our boss ignores her completely, she just communicates with her by email.

Our boss yelled at me once and I put a stop to it... I told her that I was going to start looking for another job because she's impossible to deal with. That was the last time she's treated me like that (I have started looking for work elsewhere). To be quite honest, my husband and I are planning on getting pregnant and I just don't want to be around someone like her if I am going to be treated like my coworker is.

I think it's a form of abuse... I think she's trying to dominate my coworker by withholding communication. Am I correct?

I'm glad you've had the opportunity to see what's happening to your coworker. Remember when you're looking for another job that most company insurance policies have a waiting period for maternity coverage. If you get a new job, make sure you look at the new insurance policy very carefully so your pregnancy will be covered.

If your current job is a good one: work you enjoy that you're well-compensated for doing, consider trying to change the current situation. Discuss your concerns with your current boss. If she responds poorly (seems likely!) go to her superior and point out the high turnover and the employment violation you've noticed in the dept. Don't lose your temper or display any emotion--just logically state your case. It may help. It may not. Since you're already looking for something else, you'll have something to fall back on if things don't go well, but you'll be certain that you need to leave instead of wondering how things would have gone if you had tried harder to stay. Good luck!

Could potential be a violation of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act . She is suppose to treat her like she does all of the employees. However, the burden of proof is on the employee.

Link below will take you to the act.
