Actually, these devices you say are keeping people MORE social because they can just interact with you on a non physical level, and more on a mental level, like right know with Yahoo answers.

Whats making people more isolated is 1), corrupt feminism and ideas that women don't need and shouldn't want men around. 2) The medias protrayal of relationships, love, and marriage as stupid and degrading, making dating more about the individual and easy quick pleasure. Also, it's protrayal of pushing more narcism in peoples behavior. 3) Homophobia. More people are worried about sexuality to the point where they isolate themselves from those who seem they could potentially be non-straight even though the person is actually straight. 4) Fear of offending those who are too PC. People are afriad to date and communicate in person more because of this.

So I don't think it's technology to blame, technology is actually one of the few things left holding people together to communicate at least through the net since many are too afriad to do so in person.

Social isolation is such a misnomer. Unless you are a hermit in the woods, providing entirely for yourself, then you cannot help but interact with someone at some point. We have not reached the point where we can have everything we need sent to us via computer and/or autonomous robotics. Even if such an vision becomes reality we will still need a way to pay for it all which means interacting with someone in some way.

Technology provides more means to interact with people in ways we never had before. Even single player games are being shoved aside for multiplayer environments. Kids may be avoiding the dinner table but, frankly, they have been doing so for years, even before the telephone. I believe, but have not had time to verify, that the children who regularly looked forward to dinner with their parents were the ones growing up on farms where the nearest neighbor was 10 miles away. Their family was their social envirnment. Essentially they were more isolated than today's kids interacting on their computers.

We can say that internet shutins are socially isolated but the truth may be that if we tried to enter their world we would be just as socially inept.

Kind of..

Ipods and such will help you interact with other people like asking what song you got, getting common interests..

But then again you can just sit at home just listening or downloading music...

Computers for example can be used to IM or Yahoo Answer, but then again you can just stay hope instead of going outside with your friends and such..

Hmmm, I sit at home in my safe and secure abode, answering questions on yahoo answers, while packing in a pound bag of dorito's & mountain dew 2 liter bottles by the hour, don't have to interact verbally, get entertained by answering questions to the best of my ability giving me my warm fuzzies, and not being criticized for my weight or looks. Is that really socially isolated, or is it what society deems to be socially isolated. Does person to person interaction define social activity. Wow, am I socially isolated or what...

Technology is good but not in all circumstances. It can alienate people and make them victims of their own innovations. Many people are abusing technology in ways that are very dangerous. There is no privacy anymore and "Big Brother" is watching!Unfortunately the use of technology is easily in the hands of some very sick minds that control the universe and cheap, continuous propaganda is an easy means to control the human mind.

But haven the music to urself is the best so its balanced but not when ur talken to someone

Yes, technology is becoming a great hurdle in social advancement today...For example, a lot of teenagers would prefer chatting online for hours rather than having dinner with their families....

Technology is a coin with two faces, good and evil

Yes, sad isn't it. It really is a shame when people are interacting via electronics vs. face to face human interaction. There is a world full of life and people would rather sit inside in front of a TV or computer monitor. Those people are truly missing out on life.

Yes. We have always feared that our downfall would be from an oppressive government ("Big Brother" in the book "1984"), but it is actually happening as a result of our "distractions" (as in the book "A Brave New World"). For those of you who are reading this, I would just like to say that I know many of you are very thoughtful people, and it does mean a lot to me to exchange thoughts and opinions with you. Thank you.

yes and no

yes - there are so many "distractions" that it often seems easier to play games & become more isolated rather than simply going out & meeting people and developing better social skills

no - if you do know someone, communication can help you stay in touch; also, "nerds" (i.e. intelligent, sensitive ectomorphs) often need to be alone anyway, as they develop social skills more slowly & need more time for studying & inventions etc., so they can develop even more technology
