i bought a maxtor external 80gig drive and i cannot view it or open the drive with my comp i already used it and all of a sudden it does not show up under my computer but its there in the device manager.
how can i view it and make it the master in my comp

try unplugging the USB cable form the comp and plug it into another USB port. Windows SHOULD find the drive as new harware (since its in a new port). I had the same problem with my Lexmark all in one. Once I did that, its worked like a charm ever since.

I once had this same problem. It turned out that the CD ROm was using the drive letter originally assoc with the external drive.

change the drive letter of the external drive in the disk management options....

Probably or maybe its corrupt,but don't worry,it can get repaired.
Norton systemworks could fix that problem.
