1 Astronomical Unit = 1.58128588 × 10^-5 light years
So a light year is much much bigger!
In fact 1 AU is the mean radius of the Earths orbit.
Hope this helps.

a light year is much greater. an au is the distance from the earth to the sun. it only takes light 8 minutes to reach earth from the sun and that distance is about 93,000,000 miles. the nearest star is alpha centari which is roughly 4.5 light years away. so, light from the sun is only a quarter of the way to the nearest star in one year. this gives you an idea of how huge our universe is in comparison to our solar system. one of the closest galaxies is 2 million light years away. and it is considered close.

1 a.u. ≈ 8.3 light-seconds. There are as many light-seconds in a light-year as there are seconds in a year., so
1 a.u. <<<<< 1 light-year
