I'm a conservative, lived in South Africa for 14 years (probably the most developed African country) and now live in Europe and so I have first hand experience when I say that S. Africa is very 3rd world and an absolute dump.
The crime, disease, corruption, incompetance, ignorance, poverty is unbelievable (link tells all, 2nd a Q from another South African) and everything is run incompetantly mainly due to affirmative action which is destroying the country.
But in South Africa there is this policy called the "rainbow nation" where 'we all live as one big happy family of all colours'. The Left wingers down there really get off on that policy. They spend most of their time in the least developed parts of S. Africa cleaning up the mess of others, intergrating with their African brothers who are actually responsible for the mess its in.
The common excuse there is that Apartheid caused the decaying of South Africa but that ended over 10 years ago. If you say that Apartheid is no more and that the new government is responsible, all the Left wing whites will call you a racist colonial.
But funnily enough when these Lefties have their children raped and/or murdered by the wonderful Africans, they suddenly stop been Lefties and realise that the "racist colonials" they hated so much might've been right after all!
NOTE: and for everyone who thinks they know more about S. Africa and that my views are wrong... have you even been there? I've lived there for 14 years. I know.
Also note: don't think that the Africans of South Africa are like every other African on the continent. They are very different. North Africans aren't stupid at all.

You will probably read more "lefties" talking about helping the third world, because "lefties" have generally been much more in favor of foreign aid and international development.
But you will also read many church groups talking about the third world, about providing humanitarian aid and doing missionary work.
Most of the world's people live in the third world -- any attempt to understand the world or even to make it better has to deal with the third world. That includes, by the way, understanding how to improve the business prospects of the US, and how to prevent and catch terrorists, and how to better mankind. Many people like their home, many Westerners love aspects of particular third world countries -- but that is mostly for tourism or cheap labor.

The Third World is a dismal place. It breaks my heart and I am thankful I live in a first world nation.
BTW, I'm not a conservative or a liberal. I am somewhere in the middle, but slightly more to the left.
