I have taken the MCAT twice. Scored a 31 the first time, but my score expired before I applied (scores last only 2-3 years). So I took it again in April 2005. Scored a 32.

Both times, I did Princeton Review Hyperlearning classes. The class time was necessary for me. Some people are fine locking themselves in a library, but I needed actual discussion. I would recommend shelling out the $1200 for Princeton Review.

The second time I took the MCAT, I started preparing in January. I finished grad school a semester early just to devote ALL my time to MCAT prep.

I studied with other people. We would get together to do timed practice question blocks. When time was up, we'd go over answers together. Having discussion is key, imho.

Do lots of test questions, get kaplan or princeton review. Test questions over and over...

I'd say start a couple of months before the exam as long as you've had the classes you need for the test recently. If not, you prolly want to start a little bit before. Just make sure you'll have enough time to study, it requires a lot!!
