I did a bit of looking around for this idea and there are a lot of sites and boards talking about it. Lots of people say it works, however, there was no scientific evidence for it. People tried it and decided that they got 30% more out of their gas tank.
A couple of points were made. The first is what damage is happening to the engine? People pointed out that the acetone mixing with the oil could cause oil break down which will wear out your car parts faster. Also, what about the catalytic converter? Would there be any damage there.
Also brought up was if this did work, then why did you not see someone trying to capitalize on it. There are a ton of fuel additives on the market. According the the boards I read, not a single one declares that it is using acetone to increase fuel performance. Acetone is cheap and easy to find. There would be an incredible profit for someone to buy the stuff, stick it in a bottle, slap a 300% markup on it (or more) and sell it. For some reason, this has not been done by anyone yet.
Finally, what sort of environmental damage the spent acetone would have was a question.
I would say, do not do it but instead wait and see how other people do with this idea. If you save $15 bucks a tank but your car's engine is totalled within a year, you would not be saving too much money.

All the seals and gaskets and fuel lines between your fuel tank and the engine cylinders are selected to withstand gasoline, or gasoline with up to about 15% ethanol. Acetone is an extremely good solvent for plastics and rubber and would attack these items straight away. So if you do not wish your fuel tank seals etc to proceed through the combustion chambers of your engine, I suggest you give the idea a very big miss.

adding acetone is the easiest way to increase your octane level in gasoline, but very unhealthy and using it in the long run will shorten your engine life.

Acetone will screw up the emission system, probably set off your check engine light. It will also bust up any crap in the fuel filter and cause F.I. problems.I only use acetone to clean my bong.
