In most states, the answer is "no." It's her choice if she wants to take it.

Same when they get divorced, if she took it then it's her choice if she keeps it or goes back to the maiden name.

No you do not have to but it is tradition

I think women should; what better way to say that you two people are as one. They share the same last name they are family, God has blessed you two to find each other and now you should take his name to show him that he is your King and you his Queen. It shows togetherness dont let it just be about tradition its all about you and him making yourself as ONE. Don't let today's independent attitude of we don't need each other. Yes we do, just think when we all getting married, staying together this world was in better place. Home life and family life was no#1. Trust me show him that you have no problem expecting his name because you want him to know how commited you are to him when getting married. This does not change who you are but the begining of a new life just as your parents did. That is why you have the last name you have now. For a man to offer his name is big step, he wants you to always be with him Mrs. Jones............................

No, not by law. And things have changed so much, where there is no actual legitimate reason to get married, except maybe financial, but really women can take care of themselves(and men can too). Don't get married... it's not the 50's anymore. Learn to adapt to changes in society(and life).

She doesn't have to take the male's last name but that is normally how things work. She can put a hypen in between her maiden name and the new married name.

Legally no, but then why marry a girl who doesn't respect you. There are many girls who wouldn't think to do anything else. If it's important to you clarify the point before you propose. Ask her if she wants to be Mrs x. There are many guys who don't care one way or the other. Sometimes there is good reason to take her name.

No they do not have to. Many do because it's tradition. The reason why they did back in the day is because women were considered property of their fathers. That is why women are "given away" at their weddings. It does not mean the same thing now, it's just tradition. Some women keep their maiden names and many, like I will one day, hyphenate it.

If your husband is the main health care provider then you have to take his last name on the insurance records but not on everything else is you don't wan to....I know because I have done just that and it works out fine. I never even changed my social security card none of that.....on my job I still use my maiden name.

No. She can choose to keep her last name or combine names like Smith and Jones to be Smith-Jones. I think it's just easier, in the long run, to go ahead and take the husband's last name.
