The best shows i was fortunate enough to see were Pink Floyd (Toronto, Ontario, September 1987), David Bowie (Toronto, Ontario, August 1987), and Stevie Ray Vaughan (Fredericton, New Brunswick, January 1990).
The Pink Floyd show wins for the sheer *spectacle* of it all, plus great performances by all. The only issue was sound quality. This was at the beginning of their world tour, and not all the bugs had been worked out. But even with that, it was an incredible show, and an incredible event.
The Bowie show wins for the best sound i have *ever* heard: and i am including home systems, headphones, *everything*. I would never have believed speaker stacks as big as skyscrapers - in an outdoor stadium - could have produced sound so clear, so pure, so *brilliant*. Great performances - especially by Mr. Bowie - along with an excellent stage show. A close second to Pink Floyd in the "spectacle" department.
But as great as those shows were, i will choose Stevie Ray Vaughan (and Double Trouble) as the best live show i have ever seen. It was in front of a shamefully small audience in a small hockey rink in a small town.....but you would have never known that from his performance. He put *everything* into his music that night.....and i will always treasure the fact that i was one of the lucky people who got to see him play live. R.I.P. S.R.V. You made a difference, and you are sadly missed.

I have seen so many concerts over the years. Most were phenomenal, a few -- horrible.
Here are the groups/people that I think put on the very best shows:
Big & Rich (2006)
Gregg Allman (2005 & 1999)
Journey (1998)
AC/DC (1998 & 1981)
Kris Kristofferson (2006 & 1978)
Eric Clapton (1979)
