1 yd² = 9 ft²
To get an answer in yd² it is easiest and least confusing to convert all your linear measures to yd first.
Now about square yards:
36 in = 1 yd So 36² in² = 1² yd² ie 1296 in² = 1 yd²
3 ft = 1 yd so 3² ft² = 1² yd² ie 9 ft² = 1 yd²
0.9144 m = 1 yd so 0.9144² m² = 1² yd² ie 0.83613 m² = 1 yd²
etc

Depends what you start with.... inches, miles, feet. Say you wanted to find out what a 10ft by 10ft room is in square yards.
First calculate square feet (10x10) = 100 sq. ft.
Since there are three feet in every yard, that means there is one third of a yard in every foot. So you'll be using two multipliers, just like this:
100 sq. ft x 1/3 yd/ft x 1/3 yd/ft = 100/9 sq. yd. (Notice that the sq. ft is canceled by the denominators).
Now simplify your mixed number: 11 1/9 sq. yd
I teach Math, so you can be sure this is correct.
