I know they don't put the on by hand but I would like to know exactly how they work. I know the old school racers would glue lug nut on the rim but is that still in practice?

glued to the wheels. the air wrench just screws them right on while breaking the glue

They are glued to the wheels, so that the tire changer just has to set the wheel on the studs and tighten the lugs with the air gun without even handling the lug nuts.

Glued to the rim, studs are long with unthreaded ends to poke through the lug nuts, so the wheel slides over the studs, then the tire changer tightens them (most of the time).

the lug nuts are loosely tightened on the wheel so all they have to do is zing 'em on and off. the tire changer may have a couple on his head in case one doesn't go on right or gets away...

The lugs are held in place with adhesive so it is just lining up and hitting with the impact wrench.
