Halloween is the 2nd biggest holiday behind Christmas (spending money wise). But did you know that Halloween wasn't always about spooks and ghosts? In fact, it used to be a holiday of Love! As Valentine's day is a holiday for lovers, Halloween was a holiday for single folks, looking for love. There were many games about finding your future husband and full of cute little poems.
May every trick
That you try tonight
Fortell a future
of True Delight
Here are some games that others played .....
Take your ball of yarn and fling it out the window, he is to be your fated husband will come to wind the string.
Get a big pot of boiling water. Peel apple and throw it over your shoulder, into the water. The shape the peel forms will be the letter of the first name of the guy you are going to marry.
The "fortune cake" was a popular Halloween party item: Typically a wedding ring was baked into a cake, and whoever got the slice with the ring would be next to marry.

Its actually STILL a pagan holiday. LOL All Saints Day is November 1st. It was believed that on All Hallow's Eve, the separation between the spirit world and the real world was non-existant, and the dead walked the earth. Jack-o-lanterns originated as a means to keep spirits from coming into your house. For early Christians, All Hallow's Eve was the day you feared the dead, and All Saints Day was the day you celebrated them!

It is an old pagan holiday that celebrates the end of the harvest season and the loved ones that have passed. It is also the end of the Pagan year because our way of life back in the day revolved around farming. This is the watered down version of course but if you want more information I will happily oblige.

Currently it is a marketing strategy. Formerly, it was to celebrate the day before All Saints Day thinking the devils would come out the day before we celebrated the Saints.
