Bush's approval rating is less than 40% and Congress's approval rating is less than 30%.
Republican candidates are trying to separate themselves from Bush and some cases their own party. This will hard since Republicans have been rubber stamping Bush's agendas for the last six years.

They are running away from the storm. With the Bush administration crumbling, republicans have to still get elected but they don't want to be affiliated with a failed Bush.

Prepare yourself. The day before the election, some earth shaking news will come out of the White House that will sew up the election for the Republicans.
Iraq is the only thing stuck in America's craw right now. One major policy change there and it's a Republican landslide.

Because he has become "Typhoid Mary', politically, Democrats not liking him, Republicans not liking identification with him. A "Lame Duck" president who is seen by fellow republicans as 'set in concrete' at a time when his popularity over-all is in the out house.

They disagree with some of his policies, and to continue to support him would be detrimental to their political careers, with an election coming up, especially. In order to insure that the GOP makes a senate majority in the next general election, they are cognizant that going their separate ways as non-supporters is the smart thing to do.
