We're talking MEN AND BOYS here. Until very recent times.....actually just 35 years ago, the majority of women throughout most the world had no prayer of being a complete human being...of course they always were in actuality but that simply was not acknowledged...thus if they like me (I' m age 59 and was a child during the 1950's) thought they could grow and pursue their interests, they might like me go numb and getting very panicky when they realize the plight of most women!!! Luck lily, for all the women alive today in Western countries, the women's movement started up in the late 60's and 70s. I was a proud participant and leader in this movement. And so many more opportunities have resulted. Now at last our daughters and granddaughters can have the opportunity to have a heroine and work towards their dreams.....Now men and boys how'd you like to have been a girl then? Suppose the roles were reversed and it was boys who were so brutalized? How's you like that? Think about it and have compassion and great respect for all women and girls!

Margaret Sanger. She was a nurse who saw the plight of women overburdened with children they couldn't afford to have. Her and her sister opened an illegal clinic in New York to distribute information regarding family planning and birth control but she was arrested shortly thereafter. In her later years, she and another business partner helped invent the birth control pill. Thank you, Ms. Sanger.

I agree with Alicat

Your father would have been the person to immulate during that time period. It does mean that your parents were your only option. Most people could not read...most people did not go to school...and there was no TV or even Radio back then.
