If you are talking about your Instant Messenger "smiley" face, then you have probably got it set to "hidden" or such as that. There is a setting in your Messenger to let people know when you are online (the smiley face is yellow), or you can have it set so that nobody can tell if you are online or not (the smiley face remains dark).
Check your settings in Messenger. Update them to what your preference is...

I've shown up online when I was off and someone got angry with me for not talking to them. Try explaining that to someone. I don't know why it happens.

where is it showing up, if it is messenger, then you have to select how you are displaying yourself. should say something like "Show me as.....busy, out, etc...

you must have it set to 'invisible'
