The little kids that I know are coming, I fix a Halloween plastic bag for : a candy bar(mini) suckers gum, maybe a finger puppet. The older kids that come bye I give, each a couple of mini candy bars, gum, suckers. The earlier it is in the night the more I seem to give out. After about 9:00 I give what I have left.

Two or three small "fun size" candy bars. When I was a kid, I used to hate it when people gave out fruit. That's no fun! Haha! Or like two lollipops. You don't really need to give out much more than that, since they will be doing alot of trick-or-treating, plus they will probably get some at a school party.

Because obesity is the problem of so many people(adults and children alike), we give a small candy bar to each child(under 5 years old), two small candy bars to each child that doesn't look like a teen, and three to five small candy bars to teenagers. We also don't buy candy bars that we enjoy so that we will give out all the small candy bars and not leave some around the house for us to munch on!

if you live in a neighborhood where a lot of kids are trick or treating at to a lot of different houses, then just one fun size item would be fine because thats a lot of candy to get in one night. if you live in a "rich neighborhood" where kids expect you to give out a lot (because you can afford it) give them a premade goodie bag with a few candies and maybe a prize as well like a pencil or stickers or just give them a full size candy bar or cans of soda. Jones has mini cans with different halloween flavors that you could hand out too.

Your neighbourhood doesn't sound like much fun :( Don't they know it's supposed to be about the fun and not the candy? I don't think your idea is tacky at all. Maybe with your modest goodie bags you should send out a note voicing your concerns to the parents, and an invitation for a local Halloween event like a haunted house or something to get people back into the spirit. And if the kids (or the parents) complain about only getting a small candybar, smile and give them nothing instead. :)

Well I like to get the cute cellophane bags and put a 5-6 pieces in each. I generally get a good candy bar (like snickers, or twix) and then something sour, and so - on....
