try "The Lord Of The Flies"-William Golding; I think it has more than 200 pages, although written for children is very, very profound. if not this do Virginia Woolf-"The Waves"

Get "Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick. That's like 250 pages and very readable. There's also a lot of interesting questions posed by the book that you can talk about in a report. It's a classic of science fiction.

Also "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem. Another classic, although it's a bit shorter I think.

For funny sci-fi get the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. There's actually some fun philosophy and satire in there that you can talk about.

These aren't crappy no-name sci-fi books so there should be some secondary literature on them if you need ideas to fill up a report or analysis with.

These are all pretty clean books as well. Good luck.

I returned from Christmas vacation in high school to find my classmates turning in papers that I had no idea we were supposed to write, owing to me missing the last day before we got out (my teacher didn't buy the excuse, saying I should have checked the syllabus). So I had 48 hours to read a book and write a paper about it. If I remember correctly, I chose The Color Purple and actually got a B even with a penalty for late submission.

But keep in mind this was an advanced high school class... depending on your age, The Color Purple may be a little challenging.

Good luck and start brewing the coffee!

Read TEMPLE by Matthew Reilly. It isn't fantasy or sci-fi, but it does move quickly and is a fantastic read. If you want to read sci-fi/fantasy try Fred Saberhagen's Dracula series. The first book is " An Old Friend of the Family " and is also a fast book, but it is a fun read too.

You should pick up the 7th book in the Star Wars theory. Chances are you already know what's going on, so it's an easy read, with familiar characters.
Good Luck!

My recommendation would be Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. (Science Fiction) Or The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (Fantasy).
