I find so many people that use it to describe themselves and I have no idea what quality it is that they are actually trying to accentuate.

that's a supplement. A right down to earth individual is humble, approachable, unassuming, easy, consistently is familiar with different's emotions and on no account hurts all and sundry. in short, a right down to earth individual is a sturdy individual.

Normal people not someone who is trying to be something they are not. Like I know Tiger Woods so that makes me a celebrity.
I am so important because I once saw the president, in person.
So big deal. A down to earth person is just themselves with out all the big hipe.

In my experience, "down to earth" has often been used to describe a practical, non-dreamer, who doesn't have their head in the clouds and who isn't focused on false, materialistic ideals.

They may also be trying to say that they're "basic," "simple," "non-flashy" or unphased by the ways of popular culture, but using "down to earth" to make it sound more pleasing.

I feel like it means reliable, responsible, smart, having of common sense (as opposed to people who seem to have none), emotionally stable (not a drama queen) and practical.

Someone who is down to earth will talk to you about problems, not throw plates at your face. They will call when they say they will and have a great deal of their career, personal life, and finances in order. They wont try to move in with you when you've only been dating for a month. They think of more then just themselves and don't need industrial strength therapy.

They are describing themselves as level headed. They don't have their heads in the clouds; they are realistic.
