Whats with all the stupid "over the top" Welsh accents?

I'm a Cardiffian and hardly anyone I know has a mega-strong bouncy Welsh accent and says "nor" instead of "no" I certainly dont. Thats more West Walians/Valleys people who talk like that.. That lot sounded like rejects from Pobol y Cwm.

Neither do we ALL have Welsh names like Gwen, Rhys, Bethan, Carys, Ianto Jones etc. Most Cardiffians I know are just called things like Sue and Dave!

And it didn't show anything of how cosmopolitan Cardiff is. That stupid fat Valleys boy in the Pizza Parlour made me laugh - in the REAL Cardiff he'd have been a Somali.

It seemed to me that it was made by someone who isn't Welsh and has this really cliched idea of how Cardiff is. All miners and singsong down the pit and stuff.

Its like setting a series in Glasgow and having everyone wearing kilts and called "Angus" and "Hamish" and stuff. And eating haggis while playing the bagpipes.

It was OK apart from that though . . .

Scariest thing about it was seeing my EX HUSBAND walk past the camera as an extra!! EEEEEK! (He was the one who didn't look up when Jack shouted "Hey YOU!)

They also filmed an episode in the pub where my BF works, dunno when it will be shown though.

Cardigans?

I wouldn't take it personally, Cornish people (eg Wycliffe) can be from anywhere south of Birmingham!

You should be glad that Torch-wood and Dr Who has put Cardiff on the map, everyone else has spent years trying to forget it (just joking, lovely place really).

Its the same with other TV shows. Anyone upper class is called Veronica or Sebastian, not Sharon and Fred. People from the East End are called Alf and Tracie, not Gwyneth and Seamus.
Its poetic license. People who don't know anything about Cardiff, except that it's in Wales, will expect to hear names like Gwen, as it's a Welsh name. If they called people Sharon and Ted and Albert, a lot of people would'nt think it very "realistic".
I must confess, I know nothing about Cardiff, so I was expecting thick Welsh accents.
It's just the way they make TV and films nowadays.

Torchwood is not the Cardiff Tourist Information Centre.
In Sci-Fi you have to accept a bit of artistic licence. After all, in Star Trek, every alien spoke with an American accent...
It is not real life!
Not every psychologist in Manchester was called Fitz.
Not every ballet dancer from the North East was called Billy Elliot.
Not every comedian from Scotland was called Billy Connolly.
Just go with the flow and either enjoy the programme or stop watching it.
Also, are you sure people from Cardiff are called Cardiffians?

Is the bloke who does torchwood the same one who does dr who, who is someone Davis - a welsh bloke isn't he? i didn't watch torchwood but i have no doubt it what you're saying - i'm from the west country and we're only allowed milk and butter commercials so you're lucky to get something that will presumably become quite cult - can't someone think up a cultish drama that involves ....cows!?

Glad you enjoyed it though! I'm not Welsh, but it's true what you say about the accent and names. By the way love your Q&A name.
