I dreamt that I was cleaning up ashes from the carpet after knocking over a standing ashtray.

ashes = mess, difficulties, problem
cleaning up = fixing
knocking over a standing ashtray = unresolved problems,things or people you can't tolerate
carpet = place you stand, your world
It seems like there are some unresolved problems in your life that you may want to fix it as soon as possible. Projecting standing ashtray could mean problems have been hanging too long for you. Subconsciously you had to knock it out because you no longer stand the tedious problem in your life. Cleaning it is a way to fix thing. In other words, you want to fix things completely. On the surface, it may mean you can't stand people smoking, knocking out seems to be a message to those smokers that you hate smoker. However, it translates into some pride you have. You probably can't take things that is in front of you, at one point, you no longer tolerate and you wanted to fix it your way instead of standing there and let your problem/trouble hang around.
That is from your subconscious mind. You should examine your life and know better exactly what it is.

Think about how the dream made you feel. Did it make you extremely sad? Were you frightened? Or were you indifferent? If you were indifferent, you can probably trace the dream back to some random images you encountered during the day (this is the substance of most dreams). If there were intense emotions associated with it, you are probably under stress. For me and for people I know, nightmares occur most often when we under a great deal of stress. Perhaps you are not getting enough sleep?
Just remember that dreams come from within. There is no supernatural source trying to tell you anything. However, your body may be telling you something.
