First of all, Pentium D is your processor.
Normally the CD burning software comes pre-installed with your Dell but apparently something went wrong.
If at any point you don't feel comfortable continuing this, call Dell support.
Start by checking if you have any misinstalled devices by..
- click on Start->Control Panel->(classic mode)->System->Hardware tab
- click on Device Manager
- take a look for anything that stands out of the rest like a yellow check mark or question mark, as well as red X. If that's the case, insert the CD for the device, right click the item with the error, and choose Update Driver
- do all your Windows updates by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- then look in Start->All Programs (or Programs) for a program that could be used to burn DVDs. If it's not there, look in your CDs and if you have the disk, install it.
Hope this helps!

i have a dell and couldn't be happier. i would recommend calling dell, or emailing, and telling them that you think that something went wrong. even if your drive can burn Cd's you will still need software to tell the burner how to do it. good luck

XP will burn CD's, but maybe not like you want. If you are simply copying files to CD, then XP will do that. Just open a folder for that CD and copy to it. It actually copies the files to a temp folder then you select "File" and "Write files to CD".

Call the company. I have an Inspiron 1300. The only problem I have is that it freezes up once or twice a month.
