Why do so many countries watch American movies?

I mean, they're really up-to-date on American movies and celebrities (Especially France)........Do they all understand english or something?

In general, we Americans don't know a lot about other countries' entertainment industries/stars- Is it just because our media is not focused on other countries or we just don't care?

oh yeah and with the music- they can't dub that!!!! Do other-language speaking people actually sing in English?

The American film industry has generally done a couple of things very right. One is that it is exceptionally good at telling stories in a way that people enjoy. It does this through good scripts but mostly by having very high production values. The films just look great: They are well lit, professionally edited and have excellent sound. The actors are well cast, and are dressed and made-up very nicely. All of these things are called "production values," and nobody does it consistently as well as Hollywood.

That doesn't mean that only big-time Hollywood movies are good movies... that's not true at all. But generally, Hollywood knows what people want to see and it delivers with very high production values. That is a big reason why Hollywood movies are popular internationally.

Some foreign countries have consistent winners, such as the James Bond series, which is British-based. Again, generally speaking these films have production values that are equal to Hollywood's -- that's one thing that makes even a bad James Bond film fun to watch.

I like Jackie Chan films and he made plenty of good ones in Hong Kong. But his American films did better internationally, because they just LOOK better and tell a sharper story.

Anyway, those are a couple of reasons why the American film industry leads the world in box office receipts.

1. The american studios are huge and products lots of movies for acceptable price. USA is just the biggest factory for making movies.
2. The movies are either dubbed to other languages, so the viewers watch them translated and talked in their motherly tongue. In some other countries they leave the original sound and there are subtitles in their language.

I am not American so I cant judge it. In every case it is really pity if you dont have there more movies from other countries. Not just for knowing the other countries stars but also because you could recognise other countries culture, fun, problems, life-style, characters, opinions and etc. And to see it via a movie is bigger fun than to learn about other countries only at school of course - in some of the good movies you can see at least a bit the "sould" of the country that made the film and it can be really enriching.

All previous answers are very good. I would add, having grown up in French Canada that the sheer magnitude of Hollywood movie budgets dwarfs other countries' attempts to compete with american movies. But there are still lots of excellent movies out there... one of the major obstacle to having exposure to those in the US is, I believe, the distribution system. Film distributors make decisions about which films they will chose to be shown on US screens. I would assume those decisions have a large financial component to them, and that probably limits the number of foreign movies we have the opportunity to see here.

Because American movies have the most famous actors, the biggest budgets and are about subjects that everyone finds interesting. Most films are packaged differently (new logos, posters, etc) and are in English with whatever language subtitles. Sometimes they even record over the English with another language, usually French or Spanish. Unlike America, the rest of the world is bi or even tri-lingual so many other people do understand English, but it just so happens that they aren't as ethnocentric as we are and aren't afraid of foreign films.

They don't have to understand English. They have voice actors in that language do voice overs for the American movies. Plus they get the movies that they're countries produce. Americans don't get those movies because I doubt they would be able to appreciate foreign art. That includes music. We just don't care. I mean, would you want to listen to a German rapper over here?
