it's talking about the hard drive. It says that a hard drive (or CD/DVD) attached to the system is in the wrong mode.

You can change this mode with the little jumpers on the back of the hard drive, there is usually a little diagram with jumper positions for master, slave, cable select.

The computer wants you to set the jumpers in the master position.

For reference, this is what a jumper looks like:

First, pull your hard drive out so that you can see the top label. You'll see a diagram showing how to setup the "jumper" which doesnt take but about 2 seconds to change. On the diagram you'll see how to place the jumper for "cable", "slave" or "master". At the end of the hard drive where the wide cable and power cord are inserted, you'll also see a small area containing around 6 or 8 small pins. This is the area that the diagram is showing. A tiny plastic jumper needs to be inserted onto the exact pins that the diagram shows for the "master". Once this is done, you'll be ready to go. Most people have more than one cd/dvd rom drive also and they too have the same diagram on their cover so that you can make one the master and another the slave. This is necessary because you've no doubt got a single, wide, cable strap coming from the motherboard on one end of the strap and more than likely you'll have to connectors at the other of the strap so that you can hook up 2 roms on the same cable, one being the master (depending on the jumper placement) and the other as a slave (depending on it's jumper placement). Let's take a look at the patient. It's sick, but not DEAD.

There is a ribbon cable that goes to just one drive. There are three possible configurations for that drive, but only one works. Take a look at the little configuration jumpers on that end of the drive where the cable is connected. It looks like there are 5 positions. There could be pairs of connections. Sometimes, you will see a label on the back of the drive that shows these different combinations of jumper settings. Let say that there isn't, but it could appear like this.

(typical Maxtor drive)
Pin 50 : : : : : no jumpers - SLAVE
Pin 50 | : : : : Pin 50 Jumper - Master/Single
Pin 50 : | : : : Pin 49 Jumper - Cable Select

(typical Hatachi drive, formerly IBM Deskstar)

' | : : : | MASTER
' : : : | | SLAVE
' : : | : | CABLE SELECT

Let us know what BRAND that you are flying with, maybe we can SAVE the Patient.

Good luck

On the back of the hard drive there is a jumper, the position it is in determines whether the drive is set as slave or master. check the jumpers to see that you have it set as master. If you are not sure what position the jumper is supposed to be in its usually printed on the surface of the drive.

There are jumpers on the one end. There is usually a little diagram that tells you what position is master/slave/cable select. You need to change that. The master plugs to the end of the IDE ribbon.

You need to change the jumper on the back of the drive in question. Between power cable and IDE ribbon is your jumper pins. Check on drive for jumper configuration.
