=The link I have attached will provide you with some of the information you are looking for including "different explainations" for such. Here is the basic defination of what may be the problem.
Definition of Sleep paralysis
Sleep paralysis: A frightening form of paralysis that occurs when a person suddenly finds himself or herself unable to move for a few minutes, most often upon falling asleep or waking up. Sleep paralysis is due to an ill-timed disconnection between the brain and the body.
The symptoms of sleep paralysis include sensations of noises, smells, levitation, paralysis, terror, and images of frightening intruders. Once considered very rare, about half of all people are now believed to experience sleep paralysis sometime during their life.
Sleep paralysis strikes as a person is moving into or out of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the deepest part of sleep. During REM sleep the body is largely disconnected from the brain leaving the body paralyzed. Sleep paralysis is the result of premature (or persistent) mind-body disconnection as one is about to enter into (or exit from) REM sleep.

That is such a horrifying feeling. I feel like I am suffocating. I think you are in a deep sleep and something so traumatic happens in your dream that you must wake up to make sure this isn't really happening. Your body has to transition from totally immersed to total wakefulness and you want it to happen now and it takes a few seconds to make it. All I know is I wake up with my heart hammering, gasping for breath. If this happens alot I hear it is sleep apnia but once in awhile is probably not apnia.

Wake
To dream that you attend a wake of a friend or loved one, foretells that you will hear sad news.
To see a friend attending a wake, forewarns that that friend is in grave danger.
To dream that you are waking up in your dream, indicates that something is missing or lacking in your life. There is an aspect of your life that you are not utilizing to its fullest potential. You are not recognizing your abilities.
See this website. i know this does not fully answer your question....or does it?

It means your body's pineal gland has been overproductive in producing melatonin, a natural hormone for putting you to sleep not unlike the drugs they use in surgery; you can not wake until the level of this hormone fall below a certain level.

It's believe that the spider spirit is above you and pressing on your chest. I had many of such experiences in my life. There are few times that I woke up eye open and I saw a big spider just above me. Clear all spider webs in your house or room and see if it happens again. Bless you!

It is a subconcious manifestation of stress. Eat, exercise, get enough sleep and try to relax.
