The true name of the country we know as Greece is The Hellenic Republic or Hellas, as the people who live there call it. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3395.htm

The modern English adaptation of "Greek" is derived from the Latin Graecus, which in turn originates from Greek Γραικός (Graikos), the name of a Boeotian tribe that migrated to Italy in the 8th century BC, and it is by that name the Hellenes were known in the West.

don't know where the word Greece came from but Greeks call thier country Hellenica
just as the Japanese call thier country Nippon
but I don't know how the English language got Greece from Hellenica.

I don't find it so ironic and funny because , as the user above me said, the real names of these countries are Hellas (Ellas) and Turkiye. It's more strange the logic of the english people who gave these names to those countries. Because the english names have nothing to do with their real names.

originally it is called hellas. the name greece was given by turks when greeks were under captivity. i just can't remember why
