If you believe that they were abusive I would not ask about it due to the fact it could still upset him. Not to sound abrasive but it's really none of your business.

I don't think it is rude to inquire about his biological parents. I would approach the topic carefully, it may be a subject he is not willing to discuss. I know alot of people who use humor as a cover when they are uncomfortable. You might also want to ask yourself if you are asking because you are REALLY just curious or you want to help him with a difficult subject. Good luck.

if you say that you suspect that your friend's biological parents are abusive then that would be the reason as to why he is always making a joke out of everything... its not always easy to cover up abuse... i really think that you should not try to ask him about it... because as of now he is still covering up his wounds from his past, he might seem ok on the outside but inside im sure he is still hurting. so asking him will just be like opening up his wounds... just be patient, if he is your close friend he'll learn to trust you enough to confide to you in the right time.. respect his decision in keeping it to himself... just consider yourself lucky that you have a much better life that what your friend had...

I dont think its rude. I had a boyfriend that was adopted. I always wanted to know but didnt want to ask. One day he said something about it. I took that as my chance to ask what I wanted to know. I started by asking "Do you ever wonder about them?" Maybe you should wait to ask until he brings up something about it.

Perhaps his sense of humor is hiding is real feelings inside which are sad . You never know.
However, it isn't rude to ask about his real parents. Chances are he will tell you anyways.

Don't ask him. Try bring up the subject. If he tells you, then HE will be the one deciding. Its not you business to bring up his past.

he may not know - depends what age he was when adopted.
As an adoptee myself, I see no reason for this to be a problem - ask away!
