A wire transfer is a transfer from one account to another account in a different financial institution. Kind of like when you buy something online and you pay money out of your checking account and into Amazon.com or whoever. It's quicker and more secure than sending a check or request for transfer, usually takes less than a week. The cost depends on the institutions, I work at a bank and our fee is different than another bank's. I think ours is something like $30 to send from here to another country. It might be different too from UK to Greece, but that's it in a nutshell.

You can also send it through Western Union and have someone in the other country pick up the cash at their local Western Union. I do that for my husband's family in Honduras (from USA). We'll send $100-200 sometimes and it usually don't cost us more than $15 to send. But they say the fee depends on how much you send and what the current rate is, maybe depending on the currency exchange rate. You'd have to check for your exact fee.

If you use your bank to wire money to the other person's bank it is the most cost effective. All you will need to do is go to your bank and tell them you want to wire money to someone's account (you will need the other person's account information). Banks charge approx. $7-20.
