The Rolling Stones released a bizarre single in 1967 called 'We Love You'. It was so unconventional that it only reached the lower reaches of the top ten. This is my favourite single from any era, not just the 1960's. It starts with footsteps and then you hear prison doors slamming before hypnotic driving piano chords introduce the song. The lightweight trippy vocals gradually come in before the whole thing erupts into a swirling Arabesque sound-scape. The chorus repeats 'We love you' over and again with the afterthought 'and we hope that you love we too'. The latter part of this extraordinary song is a bewitching eastern frenzy. It's not everybody's cup of tea and to some may sound like an over-indulgent noise. It hardly sums up the swinging sixties but fills me with joy every time I stick it on my turntable.

Nobody has mentioned The Doors. Very big influence in the sixties. Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix were also crucial to the development of punk and heavy metal.

It's a toss-up between "It's My Party" by Lesley Gore, which makes me think of the movie Problem Child. or The Shangri-Las' "Give Him A Great Big Kiss, which is always a great track for mixes.
