The first thought I had was too much soap in your dishwasher because that could leave a residue, but you say that it doesn't rinse off so it is not soap. Then I thought it could a hard water stain like you thought, because they can leave deposits on your glass. Can you filter your water through a water softener? Try running the dishes through another time with vinegar in the dishwasher instead of soap. (But you are still using the same water so I don't know if this will help.) Try jet dry. Have your water tested for hardness. Then if all that doesn't help, call Maytag and see if it is your dishwasher.

You have hard water,it's calcium and magnesium etching the dishes, especially glasses. First clean the dishwasher, pay attention to the base especially if you have a garbarator in the bottom, it might be partially blocked. check the owners manual. Then use one of the dishwasher cleaners now on the market.......we used to use Tang orange drink, the whole container in an empty dishwasher. You might try a different dishwashing tab. Don't forget about the Jet Dry. All that said, my well water and dishwasher is really tough on glasses. (the pH of dishwashing compound is not something you'd want to hand wash dishes it........if it scours off dirt, it's very alklaine. I hand wash those with cuts or decoration in the glass and use as plain as possible for the others and toss them when they etch too much.

Your problem has me a little stumped, but I was wondering if you use a rinse agent in the little dispenser in your dishwasher? If I don't, my dishes don't come out as nicely. I don't know if you are in the USA or not, or have Cascade detergent for dishwashers. That seems to work the best for me. Best of luck. I can't imagine what that white stuff is.

if u run your fingers along the inside walls do u get white on them? even so build up occurs with use of your dishwasher even your washer. what you need to do is run your unit empty with citric acid. (about a cup) run it on wash and let it sit about 15 min then run wash cycle again make sure water is hot going into the machine. You can even use sugar free lemonade powder. and make sure the drain and spray arms are gunk free. soak if needed. and I do recommend jet dry rinse agent. and lastly if soap dish is not seal prove do not use liquid soap.

I agree with the Jet Dry advice, however, I have also heard that some dw detergent has harsher chemicals in it than others. I have also had that problem and found that using Cascade eliminates it and to get an even better shine use Jet Dry in the rinse cycle!

Dishwashers often leave a semi-permanent whitish stain on glass. (Generally not on anything else)
Martha Stewart suggests rubbing the stains with vinegar. Ive tried it, but honestly, I cant recall if it worked.
If the glass ware is precious to you, don't put it into the dishwasher anymore.

I had that same problem until I started using Dish Wash Concentrate from the Get Clean line of home products. It's all natural so it doesn't leave a chemical film on your dishes either. http://www.shaklee.net/wealth-via-health/getclean/ourproducts/kitchen/dishwashauto
