I had a roommate in college whose parents were Ecuadorean. They had owls living around their house in Miami, and her mother absolutely despised them--she thought they were bad luck and invited death. She tried to chase them away during the day while they were asleep, but they came back. Oh, well.
Personally, I think owls are pretty cool but they're definitely not as brainy as their reputation. I went to a raptor rescue center once that had a bunch of owls that had been hit by cars while they were hunting. They just swoop down in front of cars after birds, mostly, and don't give a sh!t about anything around them. They just care about the kill. Now, a standard hawk or eagle will pull back if something gets in the way--you don't see many hawks hit by cars.
I was driving home one night and it was just a little past dark. I saw something swoop in front of my car and I barely missed hitting it. As it passed in front of my left headlight, I saw that it was an owl. But the bird it was chasing was stuck to my grill--I didn't see it until I got to a store and parked my car and went around to the front to look. Oh, well. If I'd known the bird was there, I'd have thrown it to the owl. So owls aren't stupid, exactly, just really driven and intent on catching their prey. Which is a little stupid, actually.
One of my cousins had a class project where they dissected owl pellets and then glued the skeletons together on a posterboard. There were mice, voles, a bird or two...gross, but interesting. Owls upchuck little wads of fur and bones that they can't digest (I don't know how their teacher got enough owl pellets for the whole class. Maybe he had a pet owl or something...or maybe he had a deal with a raptor center.)

From a falconers point of view an owl is a rather stupid (owls are not intelligent) nocturnal raptor, with silent flight, excellent hearing and rubbish eye sight. The public love them, true falconers hate them.

A, generally, night hunting bird. Some go "Twit twoo". Special feathers mean that their flight is silent.

My Mother and her family (parents, siblings) all believed that if you saw or heard an owl outside your house it meant "death or impending doom". She and her family were from Louisiana.
